Verdict: Ugly is not a comfortable watch but is a blunt take on the modern day life and human emotions; a very well written and directed film.

Anurag Kashyap who is well-known for his dark yet effective films comes up with another intriguing film and the deftness exhibited by him in presenting the film stands out. This can probably be branded as one of his finest works in terms of screenplay and direction till date. It is never easy to get the audience go through the same emotion as the characters in a film but Anurag makes it look easy. He conveniently drags the scenes with unnecessary conversation sometimes but what is fascinating is the way he makes it look ever so convincing and uses it in an effective manner to carry the emotion to the audience. There are a few scenes in ugly like the conversation about screen names for actors and the discussion regarding smart phones which exactly do that. These scenes especially carry the irritation that the characters go through to the audience. Anurag must be applauded for such a craftsmanship.

Lack of renowned artists generally doesn’t work well for films however, it did not matter much in this film. All the artists have done a commendable job and thoroughly supported the director. Ronit Roy as the cop who is indifferent to the people he loves, is brilliant. Rahul Bhatt is quite convincing as the struggling actor. Surveen Chawala as the model-actor is over-the-top and could have toned down a bit. Tejaswini Kolhapuri plays her role effectively as the battered wife. Girish Kulkarni’s stint needs special mention as well and the rest of the cast have all played their bit.

Overall, Ugly is a blend of some exceptional performances, brilliant screenplay and bold direction. The emotional effect that it brings on the audience is amazing.
